Historic Alonso Building in Downtown Brownsville

Historic Alonso Building

Saturday, September 17, 2022 • 6:00 PM

Spanish-born Manuel Alonso constructed this private residence in 1877. His "Los Dos Canones" mercantile was a popular gathering place for local residents.  French and Spanish influences are evident in the cast iron porch elements from New Orleans, with French windows and corbeled brickwork.

The architecture of the Alonso Building is a prime example of the Creole influences that can be found throughout downtown. Brownsville’s most distinctive architectural style is Border Brick, a marriage of New Orleans flourishes (balconies and French double doors) and Mexican architecture (boxlike buildings and interior courtyards), all held together with bricks of mud from the Rio Grande.
